Thai Night 2004

The Hall

This year we organised Thai Night @ the big Guild Hall in Cambridge's city centre. The theme is buffet from four regions of Thailand. Therefore, CUTS spent a budget on the hall decoration. Thus, unlike the other years, this year we started decorating the hall since 8am (See picture on the left)...

Below are a number of buffet booths from each region of Thailand ranging from (left to right) Northern, Middle (aka. Central), Southern and North Eastern.

Besides those main buffet booths, we also have the reception area (on the right) where background was entirely built from a number of bamboos (constructed in that morning!), the beverage area (below left) which was the most popular booth of the night, the souvenior area (below center) where a number of Thai craft were shown and the dessert area (below right) with a variety kind of Thai dessert (at least in the first hour!).

This year, I took care of two areas... the reception and the dessert booths. Yes, the girl in northern-style white dress with a sa-la-pao head (& face?) in those two area is me.

The stage is also decorage quite nicely with a pair of Thai textiles. The light & sound is prepared by the professional third party. With the free-style theme this year, our guests dress in only smart-casual and can be in anywhere they want (i.e. the dinning area, the watching performance area or standing around taking photos).

This year the event is quite huge, we have got around 250 guests (^^')... as a result, there seems to be a number of logistic problems (compared to the previous years) in my point of view.

The Show

There were quite a number of show this year because we have got some professional dancers (from Thailand) come to help us

The show started from a solo performance called pra-ya-ja'-forn (on the left) from the professional body and followed by the unprofessional forn-leb (on the right) performed by Por, Rat, Mew and me (^_^)

Then a number of shows have been performed: a solo Kim by nong^ Kai (above left), forn-Tien by our professional dancers which, as far as I heard, is a really excellence dance of fire (above second from the left), the southern's rong-ngang by Knot, Por, Krit and Mew (above second from the right), the north-easthern's serng-kra-tip by our professional dancers (above right), the combo between wonderful violin and piano of nong^ Yee+ and nong^ Day (left/top), the central rum-auy-porn by nong^ Coeur, nong^ Kai and nong^ Day (left/below) and the professional solo forn (right).

The masters of ceremony are Mink and Oat (the pair on the belowleft picture). Finally, the event end-up with the farewell moment from all of our dancers and supporters (below right)

Photo time

I believe that the event could not progress well without helps from my Thai friends. My personal thanks go to all my reception team (Winnie, Coeur, Day, Kai), the bouncers (Leo and Mhing), the ex-SIIT gang who travelled so far to help -- Air (Imperial), Art (Edinburgh) and Bigga (Germany), Por for teaching me how to dance and Sirirat for a nice make-up.

I'm personally glad that my supervisor (Simon) and his wife (Myra) can come to Thai Night (and see me in a strange dress) once again (photo on the left). I also invited Hui Yun along but haven't taken any photo of us in my camera yet (I was very busy during the event). Sophia -- my long time Greek friend (since MPhil) -- also came. I couldn't recognised her at the first glance since she change her hair style.

Judith and her husband (below right) also kindly come once again. I love to learn that they both would like to go to visit Thailand after the night (@^_^@)

After the event (around 10pm), their are tons of labour works to be done (e.g. destructed all the booths). This year, most of us were there until very extremely late at night (3-4am << can't remember). The weather was quite cold and lots of garbage to be collected (the job is somehow like Java). Anyway, despite that, I was also once again have fun... especially, the moment that nong^ Air kindly gave me a bottle of Champaign to celebrate the 'pass' result of my PhD viva.

Khun Aun+ worked quite hard that night as a mini-truck driver. I was sent home by the truck (me & my little bike along with the other friends and stuffs). I was quite impressed by the careness of all my friends during that time... "Thank You" once again @}--'---,----
